The Industrial Parks: precincts specialized and planned to concentrate vocation, work, resources and tools for the industrial production.

The industry is one of the most dynamic sectors and in constant growth that has prompted the regional economy in Sonora. Left behind remain the first cottage industries, that devised their products almost of craft form, to lead to the large industrial complexes that are located in all the state of Sonora, form the border line to the southern valleys, including the coastal zone.

During the decade of the 60’s, a diversification in the established industry was given up till then, with the rise of the bonded assembly plants in the border line, as part of an Industrialization Program of the Border implemented by the government in 1965, with the objective of creating more sources of employment. Cities like Nogales, Agua Prieta, San Luis Rio Colorado, initiated a considerable growth, that provided the necessary infrastructure for the creation of the industrial parks in the 70’s.

Large extensions of land, near the main ways of communication or the border line or in the same centers of population, began to plan and to endow the basic services so that the businesses interested in the zone would have everything needed for their operation.Sonora has currently 48 industrial parks distributed strategically in the

Sonoran territory, 17 correspond to the State System of Industrial Parks, 3 are related to fishing activities and are managed at federal level and the remaining belong to the private initiative.

Among the services provided are water, electric energy, rain drainage, public lighting, paved roads, recreational areas for its workers, and medical services. Some others are equipped with networks of natural gas, railroad service, and the best in modern telecommunications as it is the use of optic fiber in its internal networks and substations of broadcast of specialized data.

Sonora's labor is important and parks include it as a as an advantage of the region. Raw materials are processed in agro-industrial and fishing parks, cars are manufactured in Sonora, as well as electronic circuits of high technology.

Since the recent announcement of the expansion of Ford in Hermosillo, south of la Colorada highway, a new park is built in which the suppliers of the new project for 2005 will be installed. To the date of this edition, the start of construction of four of the larger plants has been confirmed, among them Magna.

On the other hand master plans exist that contemplate the installation of housings inside the perimeter of the same park for its employees’ comfort.

At a state level, Sonora has a great network of highways that ease the transportation of supplies and merchandise. The industrial parks have access to one or several routes to be communicated for land to any destiny. In the state there are also 3 international airports, a maritime port, Guaymas, railroads, and among all this state infrastructure, gas pipeline from Naco to Hermosillo stand out, that was established in the 80’s, with a length of 336 kilometres. Communications are also at service of the industry, cell, conventional phone system, networks, Internet, and microwaves are also offered by the state.

To speak of industry is to speak of a great diversity of branches as that of manufacture, the bonded assembly plant of export, the agro industry, the fishing industry, chemical, mining, among others. All represented in the industrial parks of Sonora.

The borderer cities of Nogales, Agua Prieta and San Luis Rio Colorado have developed great industry bonded assembly plants. Nogales is the second city in the state with more industrial parks, among the ones that emphasize: the Industrial parks City Nogales, Terraces del Cid, San Carlos, Nogales S.A. of C.V., and Nuevo Nogales harbor international industries such as: Motorola, Chamberlain, Sonitrones, Samson, Avent, Master Lock, among others. Some of them have more than one plant of production or departments as in the case of Avent (four plants) and Sonitrones (12 departments).

San Luis Río Colorado is another of the poles of development that has grasped the attention of the investors. Enterprises like Daewoo, Bose, Onion King, with Korean and American capitals have dominated in this boarder city. A very modern International Industrial Park is being developed, in which an extensive range of services for workers and their families are contemplated. Inside the future plans of this development is the installation of a customs that would permit the direct access of products and commodities from the park to the United States.

Other cities as Cananea, Naco, Imuris, Magdalena and Santa Ana have developed its industrialist potential in smaller scale. Autopartes of Santa Ana (APS) has been in business for more than 15 years operating in Santa Ana, becoming the first supplier of Ford established out of Hermosillo, who already began supplying flexible hoses complying with precision with the requirements of the company.

In Hermosillo, Cd. Obregón, Guaymas, and Navojoa besides the agro industry that transforms and gives value to the production of the field, the manufacture has been one of the large job generators. Hermosillo, being the capital, has a great number of parks that in its majority are private, all of them located in important zones of the city and surrounded with efficient and extensive communication.

Internationally recognized businesses operate in the industrial Park of Hermosillo. Great quality of labor exists in Sonora; without doubt Ford is a clear example of it and in 2003 reaffirmed its commitment to continue growing and contributing to the development of the industry specialized in the automobile branch.

One of the most important characteristics of this park is the variety of industries of different branches that operate; such as those of transformation, agriculture, and stockbreeding sectors. Businesses as Cortes y Procesos de Carne de Sonora, Norson, Rancho el 17, characterize for being large meat products exporters to international markets and regions.

Dinatech Sur is the most recent industrial park in construction and has qualified as the best equipped park built in Mexico, since it has been designed for suppliers of Ford plant. The incentives in infrastructure offered by the government will facilitate operations for the businesses installed. Subterranean installations of public lighting and high tension electric energy, networks of copper, gas, water, and optical fiber communication are part of their innovative services. It will also have a bridge to interconnect with the Industrial Park of Hermosillo and the car assembly plant, as well as an extension on the railroad.

In the Coast area of the state, the Industrial Park Roca Fuerte in Guaymas and the Industrial Park Bellavista in Empalme, have been consolidated as two large economic detonators of this zone generating more than 10 thousand jobs with the operation of 30 plants focused to the auto parts, aerospace, and electronic industry. In the Bellavista park operates the only Desalination plant installed in the state that has a capacity of 600 cubic meters daily and recently was finished to install a network of optic fiber.

Cd. Obregon is a city of great agricultural tradition. Obregon is a city in continuous growth. Mexican businesses as Cerveceria Modelo, Gamesa, and Frito Lay are present in the Industrial Park of that city.

The Autocircuitos de Obregón, (Acosa), which belongs to the Japanese business Yasaki is the greater employer to state level generating more than 5,000 jobs; is dedicated to manufacture automobile harnesses and is located in this industrial complex. Also it is important to indicate that its presence extended to Navojoa with a subsidiary that was installed late 2003; Secosa, generating 1,200 jobs.

In the parks installed in the ports of Guaymas, Rocky Point and Yavaros, the industries relate to the sea and the great diversity of products that are obtained from it, thus emphasize in them, the canning plants of sardine, plants elaboration of fish flour, freezers, packing of classified shrimp, and shipyards dedicated to the production of shipping and transportation of products.

Sonora is an attractive destiny for the foreign and national investments, the great proximity with the largest market of the world; its modern infrastructure and in growth, the great technical quality of labor and specialized as well as its great labor stability, have influenced considerably in the growth and strengthening of the economy.
